TP Smart Repairs workshop, 8 March 2025

  by Lee Jones

The automotive repair, restoration and detailing world demands precision, patience, and a keen eye for detail. Whether it's a minor scratch repair, a full respray, or restoring the shine to a faded paint job, the skill is both an art and a science.

Understanding the fundamentals of bodywork and paint application is invaluable for enthusiasts who take pride in their vehicles. That’s why we were thrilled when TP Smart Repairs in Aylesbury opened their doors for a hands-on workshop, exclusively for Haddenham Classics. The event was an immersive experience into the world of paint spraying and car detailing, giving us insight into the craft, and an appreciation for the expertise behind every repair.

A bit about TP Smart Repairs

Founded in 2014 by Tommy and his business partner, John, TP Smart Repairs started as a mobile smart repair service before growing into a fully equipped body shop in Aylesbury. Today, they work on everyday vehicles, vans, high-end classics, supercars and super bikes.

Tommy and his team bring decades of experience, offering body repairs, spray painting, fleet management, mechanical repairs, and performance upgrades. Their reputation for meticulous workmanship and a customer-first approach ensures every vehicle leaves in pristine condition.

A day of hands-on learning at TP Smart Repairs

We arrived at TP Smart Repairs’ Aylesbury workshop bright and early, ready for a day of learning and practical experience. We were welcomed with coffee and cakes, a nice boost before getting stuck in. Tommy and his team introduced themselves, sharing their backgrounds, daily work, and an overview of what we’d be learning and let’s not forget the health and safety briefing!

The schedule for the day was:

1. Understanding and preparing bodywork for painting.

2. Mixing and applying automotive paint.

3. Polishing and detailing to a professional standard.

To ensure everyone had hands-on experience, we split into two groups – one focusing on paint preparation and spraying, while the other tackled polishing and paint restoration. We then swapped over.

  Sanding, prepping and spray painting

This lesson took place in TP Smart Repairs’ fully equipped body shop, where Tommy and his team demonstrated the importance of surface preparation before applying paint.

We practised filling and sanding techniques, ensuring a smooth, even surface for a professional-quality finish. The team guided us through the use of fillers, the different grades of sandpaper, and the science of paint adhesion.

Next, we learnt paint mixing, where precision is crucial in matching colours. Using high-quality automotive paints, Tommy showed us how you would thin and mix paint for a flawless application.

With the panels prepped and the paint mixed, it was time to spray! Under expert guidance, we used professional-grade spray guns, applying smooth, even coats. It quickly became evident that technique makes all the difference, and with practice and expert advice, we improved, slowly!

  Polishing and paint restoration

This session, under the guidance of Emil and Leon from Dygas Detailing, focused on paint correction – removing swirl marks, oxidation, and minor scratches to achieve a mirror-like finish.

We explored various polishing compounds and professional-grade polishers, learning about pressure control, movement speed, and pad selection.

After hands-on experience with machine polishers, we saw first-hand how dull, tired paint was brought back to life by the experts. The transformation was stunning, and we all gained a new appreciation for the skill required to achieve that deep, glossy showroom shine.

A team that puts their heart and soul into their work

Throughout the day, what stood out most was the dedication and enthusiasm of Tommy and his team. Their passion for their craft was evident in every demonstration, explanation, and every bit of encouragement as we tried out our new skills.

The session could have been purely technical, but instead, it was fun, engaging, and interactive. Even those with no prior experience felt supported and encouraged. It was clear that TP Smart Repairs and Dygas aren’t just run of the mill businesses – they’re a team of professionals who genuinely love what they do!

The day wrapped up with a Q&A session with Tommy, where he shared insights into the automotive industry, best car care practices, and memorable restoration projects.

  A day to remember

As the workshop came to an end, there was a real sense of achievement among everyone who attended. We had learnt valuable skills, gained respect for professionals in the trade, and most importantly, had a great time.

A huge thank you to TP for hosting us. We look forward to another workshop some time in the future.

For anyone looking for top-quality bodywork, detailing, or mechanical services, TP Smart Repairs in Aylesbury is second to none. Whether you need a minor touch-up or a full-scale restoration, their passion for perfection ensures your vehicle is in the best possible hands. And I speak with experience as they restored my Rolls Royce Silver Spirit.
